The Alphalearning Brainwave Evolution
Brainwave 1 and Lotus software
The press received the Brainwave 1 as a genuine breakthrough. The Synapsia Journal called it “Neurosurgery with light and sound.” After presenting a rudimentary version to Tony Buzan, it took five years of research, $5,000,000 of investment – and sponsors like the American Management Association, Raychem, ICL, and Henkel – to develop the Brainwave 1.
At its core, a set of four soft gold lights flashing on each eye and soft sounds transmitting into each ear allowed the brain to experience balance, relaxation, and control. To control the flashing lights & sounds, the Lotus software and its expansion card needed a PC. A second computer continuously ran an Electroencephalogram to monitor how the brain reacted to the light & sound stimuli. This two-computer configuration worked for several years.
The PC takes a new road
Several industrial and highly personalized applications suffered a hit when Microsoft Windows XP was released in 2001. Alphalearning Institute’s Brainwave 1 was not an exception. It was designed to use the printer port to control the lights and a Sound Blaster 16 compatible sound card to deliver the stereo sound. Also, to guarantee the precise timing and coordination between lights and sounds, the Lotus software needed to take exclusive control of several hardware resources from the PC. For the benefit of OS stability, since Windows XP, no software can exert this level of control on the PC.
During the years that followed, the Lotus software was rewritten to run under Windows XP and Vista, with non-SB sound cards and, after the disappearance of the printer port, to use the then-new USB standard to control the lights. All of these attempts failed for a simple reason: no one wants to put their brain at risk. —– The software is time-sensitive, and Windows changes its speed and coordination when it decides to run an update, an indexation, or any other of the several tasks an operational system does behind the scenes, allowing no user control for it.
Brainwave III controller and a new Lotus Software
The only possible solution was to create specific-purpose hardware and design new software, both in perfect synergy, with no third-party OS involved. Additionally, it should be able to control any previous version of the optical neuron synergizer produced by the Alphalearning Institute since the ’90s. After two years of research, development, and testing, the Brainwave III was finally assembled in the Fall of 2020. The precision and features achieved with this version are far beyond what was possible with the PC and the original Lotus software.
The Brainwave III controller hardware is comprised of:
- Two independent processors
- 7″ capacitive touch display
- Exclusively designed dedicated sound card
- Stereo sound at 32 bits, 44.1 kHz
- Audio line-in available
- Two ports, so two people can use it at the same time
- USB-C power connector, with charger and cable included
- Removable SD Card to edit and create new sequences
And the new Lotus software has:
- Precise timing to synchronize lights and stereo sound
- Intuitive, user-friendly design
- Improved control for light’s brightness
- More precise light and sound balance control
- Play, pause, and stop buttons are available while running a sequence
- It is possible to jump to any part of the sequence without stopping it
- Lifetime license and updates
A new Optical Neuron Synergizer
Following the Brainwave 1 original version with four lights, Alphalearnig developed a 16, 70, and ultimately the 32-light model already in use for several years. Although the 32-light version induces a deeper effect on the brain, the previous models work perfectly with the new Brainwave III controller with the same effect as before.
